The business of telecom in 2008 has been a stormy voyage, but perhaps less so than other sectors. Consolidation seems to continue to play an increasing role for both service providers and the companies who sell them OSS and BSS solutions. The European space has seen it share of challenges this year and the outlook is cautious for 2009.

Finally some good news in the the world of OSS in our home and native land. Seems upstart Conceptwave, who invented the market for order care, has been recognized for their contribution within HP’s portfolio of telecoms products. They were awarded the HP CMS Business Partner of the Year.
We had written about the company before and it’s not surprising to find them getting some well deserved press again. Rich Karpinski over at TelephonyOnline interviewed Chun-Ling Woon is VP of marketing and business development at ConceptWave. They discuss service composition and catalogs. Listen here.
The Shulist Group has worked with Conceptwave in the past.

We are always fans of big numbers. Way back in 1995 we heard that Bob Metcalfe (inventor of ethernet networking) predicted that the flood of data on the Internet, at the time, would bring it to its knees in 1996 or he would eat his article. We later read he munched up the article in front of an industry conference in 1997—a man who lives by his word. We’ve always been interested in the growth of internet data, predictions of its demise and the crow-eaters who predict.

Seems that the fashionistas over at Saudi Telecom are hard at work again and just in time for the gifting season. Now you can toss out that old dust encased, octopus plugged, wireless router and replace it with a fashionable new router flower vase. We cannot determine if this is actually a retail product but, if it’s not, then Saudi Telecom - just say no! Chris Davies over at Slashgear provides an overview of its all encompassing beauty.

Microsoft’s Connected Services Framework (CSF) has been declared dead. It seems that Microsoft has found out just how hard it is to standardize a product across the industry. CSF was a move boldy announced in 2005 where Microsoft claimed it would revolutionize Telco 2.0. Carol Wilson over at Telephony Online has scribbled its eulogy.
“If you look across the deployments for service delivery platforms, they have tended to be highly customized, very integration-intensive,” said Terry McGuigan, director of global partners for Microsoft’s Communications Sector. “The degree of customization required has caused us to re-think whether we could use a standard platform.”
While Microsoft did manage to attract about thirty telcos worldwide they seem to have been unable to find common ground which they could move the product forward on. This comes as no surprise to anyone who has ever built a support system for the telecom industry.

The weekly weird telecom story has to go to the four stories over at TotalTelecom.
- Seems that a Polish fellow living on Internet Street is moving (reason: no internet),
- The GPS takes you to an unexpected good time (memo to self: wear flak vest),
- Software that tells me I’m ugly—perhaps I am boot ugly, and
- Driving, talking and other ruminations.
Ahhh a little levity never hurt anyone.

Over at Billing and OSS World they are running an interesting poll. Its asking about the degree to which you would trust your mobile provider to personalize information to you. It seems to us that this is a great question to open the debate about just what service providers are doing with our information. Over the next few weeks we are interested is seeing the results as the votes get tallied.

We are were rather embarrassed recently by a friend asking if we’d seen Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame? Why no, we’d never knew such a thing existed. What with the demise of many of the Telephone Pioneer organizations it seems we’ve lost much of our telecom history. Gone are the days that in almost every telecoms office building there was some historical display managed by the Pioneers.

Seems like the FCC has a little bit of ’splaining to do. They sort of, ummm…, paid the US telcos a little too much money from the Universal Service Fund (USF). We reported on some shenanigans at the FCC a while ago and it seems it continues to provide more entertainment value. It appears that they have given out $970M more than they should have.

Way back in 2000 Telnic proposed an interesting new Top Level Domain (TLD) .tel to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). It took them six years of fooling around with the idea and in 2006 they finally approved the proposal. Its taken another two years to get the idea to the market. Boy, the internet moves at such a rapid pace!
